Tabla
Tabla is a North Indian percussion instrument. It is used to accompany vocal and instrumental music in India. It has its own repertoire which is played in the tabla solo performances or in improvisational sections during the accompaniment. Since last few decades, tabla is a highly recognized in west for world musical explorations.
RSIM offers the traditional tabla learning pedagogies with a blend of modern facilitation methods.
Manjit Singh, the director of of RSIM carries a lineage of world famous tabla player Ustad Alla Rakha ji through the learning from Sr. Kulwinder Singh the disciple of Abba ji. He has designed the tabla courses with the repertoire which he prerequisite from his teacher, but with the standard of the teaching methodologies used by music educators in the NZ standard schools. Therefore our tabla courses are unique and popular amongst the wider community.
Beginners- Beginners course at RSIM is of 2 years. In this course students develop basic techniques to play tabla. They learn content of tabla solo and learn basics of accompaniments of tabla with various performances. The course cover basic patterns of Teentaal, Jhap taal, Ektaal, Rupak taal, Kehrwa taal and Dadra taal. By the end of this course students will be able to play 10 kaidas in Teentaal and 2 kaidas in JhapTaal and they will be able to play basic patterns of accompaniment in Kehrwa, Rupak and Dadra taal.
Intermediate- Intermediate course at RSIM is of 2 years. In this course students develop intermediate techniques to play tabla in various scenarios. They learn intermediate content of tabla solo and learn spontaneity of accompanying of tabla with various performances. The course cover variety of patterns in Teentaal, Jhap taal, Ektaal, Rupak taal, Kehrwa taal and Dadra taal. By the end of this course students will be able to play 5 intermediate kaidas and a peshakara in Teentaal, 4 kaidas in JhapTaal, 4 kaidas in Ektaal, and they will be able to play thekas, duguns, laggis and tihais in Kehrwa, Rupak and Dadra taal. They will be confident in their accompaniment in various taals with singing and instrumental performances.
At the end of Advance course students become a confident professional musician and can perform confidently in variety of musical scenarios both solos and accompaniment
Vocal
Hindustani vocal is the classical singing style of north India. It includes many sub genres such as, drupad, khayal, thumri, dadra, ghazals, sufi, bhajan (bhakti sangeet) & gurmat sangeet.
RSIM offers the learning of classical singing based on traditional ragas of Hindustani music. The courses of vocal are designed to caters the demand of students interested in exploring not only the traditional Indian Music but the contemporary musical genres of Indian music such as Bollywood, Indi pop & fusion. Daljeet Kaur, the head of school upholds the essence of Hindustani music through her traditional learning singing and her masters in vocals from India. She is the most admired and favorable amongst co-musicians and students because of her patience and skill full approach.
Beginners course of singing at RSIM is of 2 years. There is no previous knowledge required for this course. Student of 3 years and above any age can join this course. The course covers the basic techniques of pitch recognition, Sargams in Bilawal That and Bhairav that, Chota khayal in raags based on both covered thats of Hindustani music. By the end of the course students will be able to sing chota khayal compostions, bhajans, and some old filmy music confidently with tabla or karaoke.
Intermediate course is of 2 years which covers the raags based on Bharavi, Kalyan, Khamaj and Kafi That. The students will learn Chota Khayals, thumris, ghazals and filmy songs based on the raags covered in the courses. The course will also provide basic understanding of taals of Hindustani music. By the end of this course students will be able to sing confidently with live music on stages.
